The Science

"I swear they are basically magic for my family. Magical science!" - Neah

Product development

Developed in close collaboration with skilled paediatric health professionals at Australian children's hospitals over a 4 year period, the design holds patents worldwide for both the anatomical shape and the unique venting system.

Designed to address traditional issues with flow consistency, leaking collars and anatomical shape while offering an unprecedented range of sizes and flow rates.

Important areas of development

01

Natural Shape - Mirroring nature

A deep latch like breastfeeding.

Babies need good attachment to be able to feed effectively so Sepal teats are designed to follow the natural shape of your baby’s mouth. The teat contours in the same way that the soft tissue of a breast conforms when breastfeeding. When reviewing scans of baby's mouths it was clear that the 'standard teat' shape could be enhanced to better support babies to attach more easily.

02

Movement of air - it matters

Four little breathing channels

To allow your baby to draw milk from the teat, they need to be able to generate a vacuum. With our patented venting system, air can gently flow into the bottle as required allowing the milk to flow. This also ensures that the teat doesn't collapse, causing your baby to detach.

03

Natural rhythm - baby led

Ensuring a comfortable feed

The unique Sepal venting system adapts and responds to your baby's hunger and only allows milk to flow from the teat when your baby sucks. This assists them to develop their natural feeding action, a cycle of suck, swallow, breathe (SSB). As a result, they can comfortably remain attached to the teat for the duration of their feed.

04

Ergonomic bottle

Narrow neck thread

The comfortable ergonomic Sepal bottles were designed to align the Sepal teat sign symbol with the bottle volume increments, guiding you to correctly position the teat in your baby's mouth.

05

Materials - recyclable options

A greener choice than silicone

The Sepal teat was specifically developed to address the unmet feeding needs of hospitals. Operational needs within the hospitals around infection control requires the use of numerous teats. To minimise the environmental impacts, we found a better alternative material to allow you to recycle not just our bottles but our teats too!

The ‘Sepal’ difference

The upper profile follows
the ‘alveolar ridge’ and
the hard palate.

The tip of the teat is
correctly placed close to
the junction of the hard
and soft palate.

The waist is oval in shape to
allow the tongue to sit
flatter and seal against the
cheeks, providing stability.

The lower profile is shaped to allow
the tongue to rest on the inner lower
lip, allowing the lips to form what is
sometimes referred to as the
‘Special-K’ mouth.

Growing with your baby

Babies grow significantly in the first twelve months. Our teats grow too, ensuring your baby continues to benefit from the Sepal teat contours.

As your baby graduates through feeding milestones, you can transition them through our teat sizes.

Science of the
perfectly designed teat

You deserve to have options so you can adapt and flexibly respond to your baby’s changing needs.
